Getting started

First things first, if you haven't got a cello we'll need to choose one that's suitable for you. And we'll need an initial consultation of about an hour (accompanied by a responsible adult) where you'll learn basic things regarding handling and care of the instrument. You'll have the chance to play the cello as well as receiving instruction on posture and holding the bow. These things take time to get used to and your lessons over the initial weeks/months will probably only require 30 to 40 minutes in length while you're starting to develop a routine of regular practice.

As we progress over the weeks and months, lessons will focus on building a strong foundation in cello playing, covering essential techniques as well as developing a basic understanding of the building blocks of music.

Music Theory

Initially, the theory of music is integrated into cello lessons where the learner starts to develop an understanding of basic concepts such as melody, pitch, rhythm, pulse, tempo etc.  Later on, there is a wealth of resources we can tap into including theory workbooks and fun digital Apps.  Learners who wish to prepare for sitting a formal theory exam normally require a slightly longer lesson in order to apportion enough time for exam preparation.

More About The Cello Collection

The cello collection comprises over twenty instruments in fractional sizes (1/2, 1/4 and 3/4 cellos) - these are ideal for young learners.  A large number of the instruments are Stentor II which are handmade using select tonewoods with ebony fingerboards and pegs.  The quality of the carving and expert workmanship results in an excellent cello for beginners.  Other instruments in the collection are made by Jay Haide, Andreas Zeller and Andrew Schroetter.  Every cello has been improved by skilled local luthiers before Alison upgrades the strings.

Lesson Fees

Alison prefers not to charge for initial lessons.  Only when we are 'up and running' and working well together does she suggest you make a voluntary contribution.  Then you might refer to the Independent Society of Musicians (ISM) current rates as a rough guide.
